If you'll be printing in moderate volumes I’d still recommend an inkjet, but for occasional use, this is a cheap printer that's well specified and produces great results - it’s a Best Buy. However, while this printer's page costs do work out at a steep 12.6p for a page of mixed text and graphics, that's only about 35% higher than some inkjet MFPs at this price. This is usually the part of a laser printer review where I point out the high running costs, and say you'd be better off with an inkjet. While there isn't much clattering from the paper transport mechanism, those fans are loud, and occasionally while they were running I heard a sudden, short-lived buzz, as though an unfortunate insect had just been sucked into the blades. Text quality was exemplary, as you might expect from a laser.ĭespite vents which could spare you from an unwelcome draft, this is quite a loud printer - particularly so given its modest speed. Those with sharper eyes might detect some half-toning patterns among subtly different colours, though, and on thin paper stock I could see some bleed through in duplexed pages. Graphics and photos alike had neutral colours, and the toner gave an even, satin finish. All configurations work well with current or semi-current Mac OS, UNIX or the Windows environments.Happily, print quality was very high. In our testing, these new Ricoh models produced consistently good print quality and fast print times in most of our speed tests.

The Bottom Line: The C840dn and C842dn from Ricoh are a great update and a real improvement overall in print quality, speed, paper handling, and toner yield. Three different finisher options are also available offering different combinations of stacking capacity, stapling, hole-punch, booklet making, and also a 4-bin mailbox. Additional paper feeding and finishing options are available to allow for many possible configurations with a maximum paper input of 4700 sheets.

Like their previous models, the new C840dn and C842dn are able to handle paper as heavy as 256g/m2 from any source and can feed stock up to 300g/m2 from the by-pass feeder and banner paper up to 12.6” X 49.6”.īoth the C840DN, rated 45PPM in color or black & white, and the C842DN, rated 60PPM, include two (2) 550-sheet feeders plus a 100-sheet by-pass tray for three independently addressable input sources totaling 1,200 sheets. There are other enhancements like the ability to auto duplex custom sizes, and media up to 165g/m2. The new models can now feed up to 12x18” size from the standard paper feeder as well as some optional feeders. Also impressive is the actual throughput speeds of both models which feature new processors and fast Ethernet interfaces, especially the C842dn which has the fastest engine speed and 320GB internal HD (optional on the C840dn). The color output we produced was fairly accurate right out of the box with only minor adjustment in most instances and the gradations produced by the C840DN and C842DN appear very smooth. The new (4800x1200) setting and color profiles combine to produce above average image quality in this class. The Ricoh C840DN and C842DN both feature enhanced 1200 x 1200 DPI output and a fast, high-powered print engine that can handle higher volume. The new large front panel, touch screen display is one of the more obvious changes from the previous model.
Setting the printer up on our network was also quick.
The Ricoh C840DN/ C842DN ship with the drum units pre-installed and the four toner cartridges, CMYK, plug in from the front of the printer.

Just like their predecessors, the C840DN and C842DN also have very low operating cost nearly on par with the Kyocera P8060cdn. The new models combine 1200x1200 DPI resolution with faster print times and upgraded paper handling.

In Short: The Aficio C842DN and C840DN are the latest large-format color laser printers from Ricoh and replace the C831DN and C830DN series which were very popular for almost six years.
